Bhubaneswar: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Organization of UNESCO has recognized twenty four coastal villages in Odisha as ‘Tsunami Ready ‘ in the 2nd Global Tsunami Symposium organized in Indonesia on 11 November.
The villages are located in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam districts. There are two villages, Noliasahi in Jagatsinghpur district and Venkatraipur in Ganjam district which were recognized as Tsunami Ready in 2020 have got their certificates renewed.
As reported, in the course of the survey many activities such as training of stakeholders, community awareness programmes, preparation of tsunami management plans, conducting mock drills and identification of evacuation routes, were organized in these 24 tsunami-prone villages,
The National Tsunami Ready Recognition Board is formed with the members as scientists of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and officers of NDMA. The members have of the Organization had visited these coastal villages for verification of the prescribed 12 indicators on the basis of which they were declared as Tsunami Prone villages in September.
There are 381 villages that are identified by the state government as Tsunami Prone in Odisha. The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) has been working constantly to secure the coastal communities of all tsunami-prone localities as ‘Tsunami Ready.’
