Bhubaneswar: Congress, the oldest political party, seems to be fading away from its track over three decades. It is not wrong to say the party is struggling to keep its political position intact in many states at present. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Congress had managed to push the BJP led NDA behind to a large extent by forming the INDIA alliance. But after that it came back with the same under performance with miserable positioning in different state assembly elections. The continuous failure in assemblies reasoned for adoption of some out of the box strategies to uplift the performance. It can only be hoped to be true as there are reports of congress being in a revamping mode. It depends on the intention of the party whether it will fulfill its promises done during election campaigning or it will hold a tag of a shallow political party having no sense of dignity and seriousness.
The ideal advice for the congress at present would be to form an election committee that would be solely responsible for managing and operating different elections starting from distribution of tickets, forming coalition, making campaigning strategies and so on. Similarly, There are many different committees in the party at present such as Advertising Committee, Investigating Committee, the Central Election Committee, and Coalition Committee etc but they hardly have any good coordination with each other and it is mostly seen that the committees contradict each other’s statement. In the Haryana assembly election, there were serious allegations against the party leadership of deviating from the party welfare, spreading false rumors, etc. Whereas the opposition took the advantage of attracting the voters towards them.
Congress tried to pose itself as a victim by alleging Election Commission of India without having any hard evidence against it. It alleged that there were irregularities in vote counting in Haryana whereas there was a sudden increase in voter’s gathering towards the end of the polling and within a short span of time the number of voting hiked like magic, as the congress accuses BJP of foul play at the ground level. The allegations were severe but it was impossible to prove the allegations against the Election Commission as the party could not produce legitimate evidence in support of their words. So it gave a chance to its critics for countering itself as a spoilsport who can not accept the verdict of the citizens. This month Congress party formed an eight member committee, called Eagle, to supervise the actions and operations by the Election Commission. It is understood that this committee is going to keep a vigilance on the actions of the IEC, which, according to the Congress party, is being partial. A central unit with one direction and control can take flexible decisions by receiving feedback from inside as well as outside the party, and will be able to work fairly. Making and forming committees to address the issues faced by the party in the election field can be a great solution but it is not to forget that a political party which is hellbent and always proactive in making new strategies to defeat it’s opponents should not be taken lightly for being beaten by any superficially formed committee. BJP has a special political tactics and along with an organizational system that is filled with workers having the power of convincing people. It is not that Congress does not have workers at ground level and they cannot pull the party up to success. They are still fighting for the success of the party but failing repeatedly due to the poor leadership at the top. The Congress has to work collaboratively by taking some learnings of organizational systems from its opponent party, BJP. It is not suitable for any political party to play the victim card and do mud singing every time when they get defeated. Rather it would be praise worthy to plan out to and strategies for attaining success.
