Imtiaz Ali Speaks on Process of Film Making; Chamkila, Rockstar

BHUBANESWAR: Success doesn’t feel easy most of the time. The you are in the sink or completely immersed in the process of your work, the praise, adulations and success do not impact you as much as they should. Mostly very grand things don’t reach you but very small incidents, like, for example, conversation, completely make you realise the joy your work has brought to you.

Imtiaz Ali speaks on the success of the Chamkila movie by mentioning it felt very touching and joyful which none of his previous films have gotten him. People have given very heartfelt and living reactions to the film by saying ‘ thank you for making this film, which according to him is very special. It feels a sense of bonhomie when people say his films are inspiring and good.’ But somehow there comes the feeling that though it was made by me, there is no presence of mine, a sense of detachment, Imtiaz says. Because creativity jas some unknown source, it feels sometimes that you are just a medium and the light of creativity comes through you and reaches to.the people.

When a film is made it certainly has a quest and inquisitive of the writer or creator which later transferred to the audience’s self-representation. It is a fact that if you can communicate with yourself then it will reflect on the others. It is a requirement of an artist. The movie Chamkila has given freshness. Our mind is becoming very cynical gradually. Such films make the mindset grounded and keep it close to the earth, the reality of life.

The ideas for creating a story, and concept build up from very small everyday observations and experiences. The story proceeds in mind by imagining any visual, incident seen somewhere you have come across. Shooting is the most entertaining part of filmmaking because different people come along, and their inputs, and ideas are incorporated. Then also changes in the scripting and dialogues happen. It’s a very ethereal process. Every film has a different process as every individual has a different personality.

Other than chamkila, rockstar was the all-encompassing film of Imtiaz Ali. Everybody involved was immersed in the process of that film. The art is not a simple arithmetic. Though life experiences are extremely important you are not arrested only by the narrowness of your life. There is no bad actor only bad direction. If you see an actor does not perform up to the mark it means he/ she has not got the correct briefing or vision from the director. It is the responsibility and skill of the director how to put the vision into the actor’s head so he/ she can perform/deliver as per the requirements.

Filmmaking has become very commonplace now due the social media and devices. Generally in the world of film-makers, there is a smoothness to some degree. In the upper layer, it goes away with time and success. So when social media, reels, and YouTubers are associated with the film a lot of people get offended. It is a general human nature that when you are young you are trying to stand apart from everybody and when you become more mature and wise you want to belong to everybody. A sense of acceptance and validation is necessary for any artist in any field.

Imtiaz Ali expresses the process of filmmaking, the ideas behind a good story, directing a movie and the art of storytelling while giving an interview on the success of his recent movie Chamkila.
