Light Pollution; It’s Impacts on the Eco- system

Bhubaneswar: In the course of the development of civilization humans discovered fire from a forest burning by the impacts lightening. After discovering the fire the humans found light by burning torch. This fire was doing as a protector to the humans from the wild animals in caves. It was a warmer during winters. The torch worked as lamp. The creation of Tungsten bulbs by Thomas Edison in 1880 had rededicated the difference between day and night from the life of human beings. Human beings started to save the electricity  for future by feeling the yellow lights of the setting sun. The florescent electric lights, mercury lights, then the sodium lights, and  now we have reached at LED lights  for the less consumption of electricity .

Though this electricity has made our life and work easy at the darkness at night, it has also raised certain risks factors for us. This issue has come in front of us as artificial lights has turned into love light pollution and Photon pollution. During the year 1992- 2017 this light pollution was increased up to 49 percent world wide. Now the earth has reach at its highest illuminated state. In most of the big cities the rise and set of the sun is not realize sed by the people. The different sources of lights have been covering the darkness of the cities. It is reported that about 80 percent people and geographic regions are affected ed by the light pollution due this excess coverage of illumination. One of the indication of light pollution is sky glow. This sky glow is affecting the flying birds in the sky. Due to the passing through of the lights Photon particles are getting spread in the air. These Photon particles are entering into our house, sleep, nervous system.

The light pollution is also creating cultural destruction by distracting us from taking interest in knowing and understanding the dreams, aspirations, and imagination of our children. To sum it up it is making our memories feeble. It creates illusion of the day in the night. So our life cycle gets distorted. People get insomniac. The culture of rising early in the morning is reducing. The broken sleep at night is increasing the rate of heart diseases and cancer. Our day begins in the afternoon instead of morning. Like the humans the sleep patterns of the birds and animals are also changing. Earlier the birds, and insects were hiding as soon as it gets dark, they only used to make noises at darkness. Recently they are inviting their death by getting attracted to lights. Researchers have stated that eye sight of the insects and the birds are also getting affected by the lights at night. An owl cannot catch it’s hunting without darkness. Due to excessive lights the owl is not able to reach its hunting. The breeding method of the male insects  has also changed due to the illusion created by lights at night.

The moon and stars at night play as important indicators for the sea creatures for deciding directions. Today’s artificial lights are making their vision unclear, so they lose their direction and become wayward. The impacts of light pollution also damages our plats, trees and greeneries. The green life is getting deluded by the artificial lights. The plants and trees need lights to perform their life de cycle but the artificial lights are increasing danger for them. Excessive lights hamper the life cycle, reproduction method, of both the trees and the animals. The humans as well as the whole environment is getting adversely affected by these exposure of lights. Light pollution like any other is also very dangerous for the eco- system. It needs to be addressed with utmost urgency.
