Bhubaneswar: BJP declares Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi after its historic victory in the Delhi assembly election. The Modi-Shah government has once again startled every one by their decision. There were many BJP leaders on the list like Pravesh Verma, Vijender Gupta etc but finally the announcement has come out that Rekha Gupta will be taking oath as the new female CM of Delhi.
The political analysts speculate whether it is a strategic move by the Modi government to keep Arvind Kejriwal from Delhi politics. The main motives behind choosing Rekha Gupta who is a first time MP from Shalimar Bagh, though not new in politics, has been a point of discussion amongst the political analysts.
Rekha Gupta would be the fourth woman chief minister in Delhi after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, Aatishi. It is said that the association of Rekha Gupta in Sangh became a very prominent support for her. Mentioning about the comparison between Arvind Kejriwal and Rekha Bharadwaj, they both come from the same Vaishya Community. The population of Vaishyas in Delhi is substantially high, the number of voters from this community are more.
The woman vote bank plays a very crucial role here as BJP’s sweeping victory in the Delhi assembly election has got great contributions from the woman voters. About 45.5 percent women votes went to the BJP along with the beneficiary announced by the BJP on the 2,500, creating a board for the house helps, LPG cylinders for the poor woman, 500 rupees subsidy, free bus service for women, Matruvandana Yojana etc.
As a result, BJP got eight percent higher women votes as compared to the last election and AAP got a reduction of eleven percent in women votes. This game changer brought the BJP to rule and pushed the AAP back. This could be a very pertinent reason why BJP has chosen a woman CM in Delhi. This could be a strategic move to win back the rest of the women votes AAP has to knock down the Kejriwal Party.
The third factor would be the vote bank of Jhuggi Jhopri in Delhi. The 47.8 percent vote share of AAP, has a big chunk from the Jhuggi Jhopri areas. The Shalimar Bagh area where Rekha Gupta hails from is surrounded by Jhuggi Jhopri. So it is a clear message from the BJP that the CM comes from your locality, one of yours to capture their share of votes. Because If a woman from their areas becomes the CM will understand and address their issues more passionately.
Rekha Gupta belongs to the state of Haryana. All the assembly seats in the Delhi – Haryana border areas are taken by the BJP completely. The reason being the influence of Khap Panchayats in those areas has been with BJP. So this purpose also is fulfilled here.
So is it a smart political card played by BJP to choose a Haryana native woman, holding the seat of Shalimar Bagh and also from the Sangh Parivar as the Chief Minister of Delhi. The purpose from all aspects seems to be satisfying as it influences the voters of all major groups which will help BJP establish its position in the capital for a longer period of time.
