The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Throws Out Nepali Students Amid Protests on Girl Student Suicide

Bhubaneswar: Nepali students in Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology ( KIIT University) Bhubaneswar, Odisha are forcefully ousted out of the University by the authorities. There were a huge raise of the Nepali students after the suicide of a female student due to the the harassment of a fellow male student in the university. The friends of Prakruti say Adwik was blackmailing her by sending her private pictures, to establish physical relation, abusing, following on the way to college, post their break up.

Reportedly, the authorities of the KIIT University had thrown the whole lot of Nepali students from the campus when they raised voice against the lack of action taken in the matter of continuous harassment a girl student of B.tech final year, ( Prakruti Lamsar) was going through, even though she had complained several times at the international matter office in the University campus. The authorities did not take any action against the boy, Adwik Shrivastava who is also a student in KIIT, was abusing and harassing the girl for a long time.

Prakruti committed suicide in her hostel room in 16 February when there was a concert going on inside the university campus.

The students protested against the authorities post the incident and the step that university took was to deport all the Nepali students from the campus, dumped them at the Cuttack railway station by a bus with the guards and police. The students say it was a desperate attempt to suppress the matter by silencing their voice. The authority has threatened, beaten and threw them out of the University campus by rebuking them freeloaders. A video has been running on the social media of the warden of the hostel, shouting at the Nepali students, “ the university is feeding and educating 40,000 students from your country free. The GDP of the University is higher than your country ‘s GDP” . This is a very toxic and inhuman  and moreover illegal way to handle or run an educational institute.

The male student whose audio tape is going viral on the internet and alleged to be the perpetrator of harassment happens to be the son of a BJP political leader from Lucknow. The matter is taking a severe political turn and international concern as Nepali is the only neighboring country of India at present that has a healthy relation with. The matter has become an international topic as the Prime Minister of Nepal ( K.P Sharma Oli) had to intervene in the matter by speaking with the founder of the KIIT University to protect the life of the Nepali students. This scenario is very unfortunate and illegitimate to behave in any educational institute in such a dictatorial manner.

After the intervention of the Nepal government and the government of Odisha forming a committee to investigate the matter, the university authority has realized it’s mistake and is trying to do damage control by apologizing, calling the students back and so on.
