Bhubaneswar: YSR Kadapa district is transforming the delivery of school meals through its SMART Kitchen Initiative, combining modern infrastructure, technology, efficient logistics, sustainability and community participation to improve nutrition for children.
Implemented under the Aspirational Districts and Aspirational Blocks Programmes, the initiative has established 38 SMART Kitchens across the district, serving nearly 1 lakh children every day.
The system operates through 105 optimised delivery routes and 95 dedicated vehicles, helping ensure that nutritious meals reach schools on time and in a reliable manner.
Technology-driven meal delivery
The initiative combines centralised mechanised cooking with standardised food-safety practices to improve the consistency and quality of meals.
The transportation network uses GPS-enabled vehicles, while real-time monitoring dashboards allow authorities to track operations and identify potential delays.
A QR-based feedback system has also been introduced, creating a mechanism for schools and beneficiaries to provide feedback and improving transparency and accountability throughout the meal-delivery process.
Sustainability at the core
Environmental sustainability is another key component of the SMART Kitchen model.
The initiative incorporates solar energy, electric mobility and energy-efficient systems, along with bio-digester-based waste management to reduce environmental impact and improve resource efficiency.
The integration of cleaner technologies into an essential public service demonstrates how infrastructure development and sustainability can work together.
Community participation
Women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) are also playing an important role in the initiative, contributing to community participation and strengthening local ownership of the programme.
