Dr Chandra Sekhar Sahoo, Senior Consultant and Pediatric – Ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospitals Bhubaneswar said, “Amblyopia is an eye problem leading to lifelong visual impairment. Also referred to as Lazy eye (amblyopia) happens when there is reduced vision in one eye caused by abnormal visual development early in life. Refractive error is one of the common causes of amblyopia. Due to lack of awareness in parents about refractive errors in children it is often identified late. As a child grows older, it gets more difficult to repair the damage of Amblyopia.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 19 million children less than 15 years of age are visually impaired; of these, 12 million are impaired due to uncorrected refractive errors and amblyopia. Also, recent evidence suggests that Amblyopia to be the leading cause of vision impairment globally, with a reported prevalence of 1.44 percent. Data further predicts a rising burden of amblyopia from about 99.2 million in 2019 to 175.2 million by 2030 and 221.9 million by 2040.
Dr Chandra Sekhar Sahoo, added, “The Bynocs Software comes as a cost effective, innovative and efficient approach to the treatment of Amblyopia in children. The traditional treatment of Amblyopia required months, and sometime even years. But with, Bynocs Software the treatment schedule is for a maximum of 20 to 30 sessions over a period of 4 to 6 weeks and patients have experienced 80-90% improvement in their visual. The price difference between the traditional treatment and this treatment is also not much.”
In the traditional method, one eye is stimulated by patching or the penalization of the other eye, but with Bynocs Software the process is completely different. Both eyes are stimulated one at a time with different contrast enhanced images. This is referred to as Dichoptic stimulation of the eyes. In certain cases, the Bynocs software can also be used for treatment of Amblyopia in adults and has shown significant betterment in condition of patient.
