Historic Baliyatra Begins in Cuttack, Showcasing Odisha’s Maritime Heritage

Bhubaneswar: The historic Baliyatra, one of Odisha’s grandest and most celebrated fairs, commenced in Cuttack on Tuesday with cultural splendor, festive lights, and the participation of thousands of visitors, traders, and artisans.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Governor Raghubar Das extended their greetings to the people of Odisha, describing Baliyatra as a proud celebration of the state’s maritime history and entrepreneurial spirit. The week-long festival, held on the banks of the Mahanadi River, commemorates the ancient Boita Bandana ritual — when Odia sailors (Sadhabas) once sailed to distant lands such as Bali, Java, and Sumatra for trade and cultural exchange.

This year’s Baliyatra features a mix of traditional crafts and modern entrepreneurship, drawing participation from hundreds of merchants, startups, self-help groups, and local artisans. From exquisite silver filigree work and Pattachitra paintings to food stalls offering authentic Odia delicacies like dahibara aloodum, the fair offers visitors a vibrant glimpse into the state’s diverse culture and creativity.

New attractions — including an anamorphic 3D screen, laser light shows, 5D theater, and vintage car exhibits — have made the event more engaging for younger audiences. Meanwhile, the Orissa High Court has directed authorities to ensure a plastic-free fairground, promoting eco-friendly practices throughout the event.

Authorities have deployed extensive security and traffic arrangements, along with dedicated facilities for visitors, ensuring smooth management of the massive crowds expected over the week.

As the conch shells, chants, and laughter fill the air, Baliyatra 2025 once again reaffirms Odisha’s enduring legacy of commerce, culture, and community celebration.
