Bhubaneswar: India and South Africa will meet in the opening T20 International of the five-match series at the Barabati Stadium this evening, with the match scheduled to begin at 7 pm. This will be the second time within a year that international cricket returns to the historic venue.
After a mixed outing on the ongoing tour—with India losing the Test encounter but winning the ODI series—the hosts will look to regain momentum in the shortest format. Speaking to the media on Monday, captain Suryakumar Yadav indicated that no drastic changes are planned for the T20 side despite recent challenges. “Our core plan remains the same,” he noted, emphasising improved execution over new personnel.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill, having recovered from injury, is expected to open alongside Abhishek Sharma.
First-ever red-soil wicket in Cuttack
In a notable first for Barabati Stadium, tonight’s contest will be played on a red-soil pitch. The Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) prepared two surfaces—one using red soil brought from Maharashtra and another using traditional black soil from Kalahandi—before finalising the red-soil wicket. Curators believe it could encourage bounce and stroke-play, hinting at a high-scoring contest.
OCA promises “error-free” match
The OCA reiterated Chief Minister Mohan Majhi’s instruction to ensure an “error-free” sporting event and smooth arrangements for spectators.
Given the pitch nature, form of both sides, and strong domestic buzz, cricket fans in Odisha are set for a high-octane evening as the much-anticipated T20 series gets underway in Cuttack.
