Bhubaneswar: The BJP-led Delhi government on Tuesday opened 45 Atal Canteens across the national capital, providing nutritious breakfast and dinner at a nominal cost of ₹5 per meal for daily wage workers, delivery personnel, construction labourers and residents of urban slums.
Each meal served at the canteens includes dal, rice, chapati, vegetables and pickle. To keep the food affordable while ensuring quality, the government is subsidising ₹25–30 per plate, officials said. The token charge of ₹5, they added, is intended to preserve the dignity of beneficiaries rather than offering free meals.
The initiative, rolled out as winter sets in, fulfils a key election promise made by the BJP. According to the government, another 55 Atal Canteens will be opened within the next 15 days, taking the total to 100 outlets across the city.
The project has been allocated ₹100 crore in the state budget. Authorities have also assured that strict hygiene and quality checks will be conducted regularly to maintain food safety standards.
Officials said the Atal Canteens aim to provide relief to vulnerable sections of society by ensuring access to wholesome meals at minimal cost, while also supporting workers who form the backbone of the city’s informal economy.
