Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to safeguard child rights and ensure continuity in elementary education, the Directorate of Elementary Education (DEE), Odisha, has issued a fresh directive mandating proactive intervention in cases of prolonged student absenteeism.
As per an official notification dated January 8, 2026, all District Education Officers (DEOs) and Block Education Officers (BEOs) have been instructed to ensure mandatory home visits for students who remain absent from school for seven consecutive days or more.
The directive follows a communication from the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR) and aims to prevent children from slipping out of the formal education system unnoticed.
According to the advisory, teachers and school authorities must immediately ascertain the reasons behind a child’s absence through direct engagement with the family. During home visits, officials are expected to assess whether the student is facing challenges such as health issues, family distress, seasonal migration, socio-economic pressures, or potential risk of dropping out.
DEE officials clarified that the initiative is corrective and supportive in nature, not punitive. The emphasis is on early identification of vulnerabilities and timely intervention to ensure the child’s return to school and continued participation in education.
Education authorities believe that institutionalising such follow-up mechanisms will significantly strengthen child tracking systems, reduce dropout rates, and reinforce the state’s commitment to inclusive and child-centric education.
The directive sends a clear message that the education system in Odisha is not only monitoring attendance but is also actively invested in the well-being, protection, and future of every child.
