Bhubaneswar: New Zealand created history in Indore on Sunday by defeating India by 41 runs in the third and series-deciding One Day International, securing their first-ever ODI series victory on Indian soil.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a formidable 337 for 8, riding on a magnificent century by Daryl Mitchell, who struck 137, and a fluent 106 from Glenn Phillips. The duo dominated the Indian bowling attack with a blend of power and placement, providing New Zealand with a strong platform on a batting-friendly surface.
In reply, India were anchored by Virat Kohli, who registered his record-extending 54th ODI century, scoring 100 off 108 balls. Kohli held the innings together and stitched crucial partnerships with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana, keeping India in contention through the middle overs. However, the required run rate continued to climb, and New Zealand’s bowlers struck at decisive moments.
Late breakthroughs by spinners Zak Foulkes and debutant Kyle Clarke triggered India’s collapse in the final phase, as the hosts were bowled out for 296, falling short by 41 runs.
Despite the series loss, Kohli’s innings stood out, drawing praise from commentator Harsha Bhogle, who lauded the former captain’s enduring enthusiasm and hunger for runs. The century also saw Kohli set new records, including the most ODI hundreds against New Zealand, further underlining his longevity and dominance in the format.
The result sealed the series 2–1 in New Zealand’s favour, marking a landmark achievement for the visitors and a memorable chapter in their cricketing history in India.
