Bhubaneswar: Dipti Mahapatra has created history by becoming the first transgender individual in Odisha to be selected for a PhD under the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in the Odia language at Utkal University. Her achievement marks a significant milestone for academic inclusion and representation of transgender scholars in higher education.
Mahapatra will pursue research focused on social issues faced by the third gender, aiming to document and analyse the challenges experienced by transgender individuals in society. Her work seeks to contribute to academic discourse while also creating greater awareness about the lived realities of gender-minority communities.
By qualifying for the Junior Research Fellowship, she has secured the opportunity to undertake advanced research with institutional and financial support. Speaking about her journey, Mahapatra said that third-gender individuals deserve equal rights and opportunities in education, employment, and social life, and expressed hope that her achievement would encourage more transgender students to pursue higher studies.
Academicians and social observers have described the development as a positive step towards inclusivity in Odisha’s higher education system. In recent years, enrolment of transgender students in colleges and universities across the state has shown a gradual increase, reflecting growing awareness and acceptance.
Mahapatra’s selection is being seen as both an academic achievement and a symbolic breakthrough, highlighting the expanding space for diversity within traditional disciplines such as Odia language and literature.
