Bhubaneswar: An unusual case of illegal cattle smuggling was reported from Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Sunday, where traders allegedly used an oil tanker to transport cattle in an attempt to evade detection.
According to local sources, residents intercepted the tanker near Barikpur Chhak on National Highway-16 after suspecting illegal activity. The vehicle, originally meant for transporting oil, was travelling from Cuttack towards Bhadrak when it was stopped by locals during the early hours of the day.
On inspection, more than 35 cattle were found crammed inside the tanker in cramped and inhumane conditions. The discovery triggered strong resentment among local residents, who objected to both the illegal transportation and the cruel manner in which the animals were being carried.
The use of an oil tanker for cattle smuggling further heightened tensions at the spot, as it indicated a deliberate attempt to bypass routine checks and law enforcement scrutiny. A tense situation prevailed for some time as locals gathered at the site.
Police were informed about the incident and are expected to investigate the matter, including the origin, destination, and ownership of the cattle, as well as the individuals involved in the smuggling operation. Further action will be taken as per law after completion of the inquiry.
