Bhubaneswar: Ahead of an intense summer, Pakistan’s water situation is expected to worsen as India prepares to block excess water flow from the Ravi River with the completion of the Shahpur Kandi barrage by March 31.
The development comes at a time when Pakistan is already facing pressure following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, further tightening its water availability.
Over the years, surplus Ravi water had flowed into Pakistan due to limited storage infrastructure on the Indian side. With the new barrage becoming operational from April, this flow is expected to stop.
Jammu and Kashmir Minister Javed Ahmed Rana said the move is aimed at providing irrigation to drought-prone Kathua and Samba districts.
“Excess water to Pakistan will be stopped. It has to be stopped,” Rana told reporters.
The project is expected to strengthen India’s irrigation capacity while significantly reducing downstream flows into Pakistan.
