Bhubaneswar: The Centre is actively working to bring back Formula 1 to India, with efforts underway to resolve taxation and regulatory issues that led to the sport’s exit after 2013.
Officials are reportedly streamlining tax-related hurdles that had previously impacted the viability of hosting races at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. At least three companies have expressed interest in operating and managing the circuit, signalling renewed private sector participation.
However, Formula 1 authorities have termed the possibility of a 2027 return as “highly unlikely,” while maintaining that India continues to be an important market for the sport given its large fan base and growing economy.
In the interim, the government is planning to host a MotoGP event as a preparatory step, aimed at reviving India’s presence on the global motorsports calendar and testing infrastructure readiness.
The move reflects a broader strategy to position India as a destination for major international sporting events, leveraging improved infrastructure and rising global interest in the country.
If successful, the initiative could mark a significant comeback for top-tier motorsports in India after more than a decade.
