DA&FW launches ‘Vermi Wash’ initiative to promote sustainable farming

Bhubaneswar: The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has launched a new organic farming initiative called “Vermi Wash,” aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers.

Described as a “natural way to feed your farm,” Vermi Wash is a bio-liquid fertiliser derived from vermicompost units. Officials said the initiative is expected to improve soil health, enhance crop productivity, and strengthen long-term agricultural resilience.

Vermi Wash contains a nutrient-rich blend of amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, beneficial microorganisms, and plant growth hormones such as auxins and cytokinins. Unlike conventional solid fertilisers, it functions both as a plant growth stimulant and a mild biopesticide, helping crops resist pests and diseases including fungal infections and wheat rust.

According to the department, the liquid formulation supports better nutrient absorption and microbial activity in soil while encouraging environmentally sustainable farming practices.

To ensure effective application, farmers have been advised to dilute 100 ml of Vermi Wash in one litre of water before spraying or field application. Agricultural officials said proper dilution and regular use can significantly improve plant growth and crop health across a range of agricultural produce.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to encourage organic and low-input farming practices while reducing the environmental impact associated with excessive chemical fertiliser use.
