Odisha Government Plans Major Redevelopment of Bhubaneswar’s Unit-IV Market

Bhubaneswar: One of the capital city’s busiest and most iconic marketplaces is set for a major transformation. The Odisha Government has announced plans to redevelop Unit-IV Market, with separate sections proposed for fish, meat, and vegetable vendors to improve hygiene, streamline operations, and enhance the overall shopping experience.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said the existing market infrastructure requires substantial upgrading despite the market’s enduring popularity and importance as a key commercial hub in Bhubaneswar.

Under the proposed redevelopment plan, dedicated zones will be created for different categories of vendors, helping reduce congestion and improve sanitation standards. The initiative is expected to provide a more organized and convenient environment for both traders and customers who visit the market daily.

Officials said the new market complex will be developed under a comprehensive master plan focused on cleanliness, accessibility, modern amenities, and efficient space management. The redevelopment is expected to benefit more than 300 non-vegetarian traders and over 400 vegetable vendors operating in the market.

The government believes the reorganization will not only improve public health and hygiene but also support vendors by providing better infrastructure and business facilities.

In addition to the Unit-IV Market redevelopment, the Minister announced plans to revive the long-defunct Panchadeva Market, which has remained closed for nearly 25 years. The government is exploring measures to bring the market back into operation and utilize the infrastructure more effectively.

Mahapatra also stated that alleged irregularities related to an incomplete market project would be investigated. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the execution of urban development projects.

The proposed revamp of Unit-IV Market is expected to modernize one of Bhubaneswar’s most prominent trading centres while preserving its role as a vital marketplace for residents and vendors alike.
