Bhubaneswar Plans Smart Traffic Signal Overhaul to Improve Urban Mobility

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has announced a comprehensive upgrade of the city’s traffic signal infrastructure aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and enhancing road safety. Under the plan, 50 existing adaptive traffic signals will be modernised, while 25 new adaptive signals will be installed at key junctions across the city. In addition, six pelican signals for pedestrian crossings and five blinkers at critical locations will be set up.

The upgraded system will be integrated with the city’s Intelligent Command and Control Centre (ICoMC) and will use Advanced Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) technology. This technology enables real-time optimisation of signal timings based on vehicle density and traffic movement patterns, allowing for more efficient management of traffic during peak and non-peak hours.

A key feature of the new system is the introduction of an emergency vehicle priority mechanism, which will facilitate faster movement of ambulances, fire tenders, and other emergency services through signalised intersections. The system will also include advanced analytics tools to help predict congestion and support smoother traffic flow across major corridors.

BSCL General Manager Purandar Nanda said the initiative reflects a data-driven approach to urban traffic management and aligns with the city’s broader goals of improving liveability and sustainability under the Smart City Mission.

Commuters in busy areas such as Jaydev Vihar and Rupali Square have welcomed the move, expressing hope that it will reduce peak-hour delays, fuel consumption, and vehicular pollution. Traffic police officials also expect the upgraded system to strengthen monitoring and management, particularly during large public events and emergencies.

The overhaul marks a significant update to Bhubaneswar’s decade-old traffic signal system and is expected to play a key role in supporting the city’s growing mobility needs.
