Bhubaneswar: A powerful explosion near the Red Fort (Lal Quila) in Delhi on Monday evening has left at least 11 people dead and several others injured, while multiple vehicles were burnt or damaged in the vicinity. The incident has sent shockwaves across the national capital.
According to preliminary reports, the blast occurred when a parked car suddenly exploded, triggering a fire that spread to nearby vehicles. The area was immediately cordoned off, and emergency services rushed to the spot to douse the flames and assist the injured.
Senior officials confirmed that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Delhi Police’s Special Cell have taken over the investigation. The cause of the explosion is yet to be officially determined. Authorities are examining two possible angles — a terror-related attack or a CNG cylinder explosion.
“All possibilities are being investigated. Forensic teams have been deployed to collect samples from the site,” an official said.
Sources said that the car involved in the blast was registered in the name of a person named Salman from Haryana, and had later been reportedly sold to another individual from Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir. Investigators are tracing the chain of ownership to determine any potential links.
While no group has claimed responsibility, security has been heightened across Delhi, particularly around major landmarks and transport hubs.
The blast has sparked nationwide concern, with leaders across party lines calling for a swift and transparent probe into the tragic incident.
