Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to replace temporary traffic sheds across the city with permanent structures this summer, citing safety concerns during storms and extreme weather.
The decision was taken during a summer preparedness review meeting chaired by Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das. Officials noted that many of the existing temporary sheds used by traffic personnel are vulnerable to strong winds and storms, making permanent installations necessary.
As part of the plan, new permanent sheds will be installed in phases across the city. In the first phase, two sheds will be constructed at Rupali Square and Power House Square at an estimated cost of ₹4 crore.
Apart from infrastructure upgrades, the civic body is also implementing several heatwave preparedness measures. These include setting up water kiosks at key locations, creating special heatstroke treatment rooms in health facilities, and ensuring adequate drinking water supply in educational institutions across the city.
Officials said the measures aim to enhance both worker safety and public health preparedness during the upcoming summer season.
