Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a city-wide survey to identify residential properties being used for commercial purposes without proper authorization, in compliance with a directive from the Supreme Court of India.
The apex court recently instructed municipal bodies across the country to inspect such violations while hearing a case related to an illegal commercial establishment, expressing concern over the growing misuse of residential spaces and alleged lapses by local authorities.
As part of the drive, BMC will constitute ward-level teams to carry out inspections across the city. These teams will focus on identifying unauthorized operations such as offices, retail shops, coaching centres, clinics, and guesthouses functioning within residential premises.
Officials stated that strict action will be taken against violators as per municipal laws. The civic body will also compile and submit a detailed report to the Supreme Court outlining the extent of violations and enforcement measures undertaken.
The move is aimed at ensuring planned urban development, maintaining zoning regulations, and addressing concerns over unregulated commercial activities in residential neighbourhoods.
