Breaking: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Citing Health Concerns

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the 14th Vice President of India, resigns from his position citing health reasons. This surprise news has come on the opening day of the Monsoon Session. As per the reports, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation, addressed to President Draupadi Murmu with immediate effect due to medical advice. Citing Article 67(a) of the Constitution, he stated that he must “prioritize health care and abide by medical advice.” He was supposed to complete his tenure of five years in the coming two years time.

As per the hospital records,the 74‑year‑old Dhankhar was hospitalized in early March at AIIMS for cardiac-related issues and monitored closely in critical care. He was discharged after four days. In June, he fainted at Kumaon University, raising renewed health concerns.

His resignation came as an abrupt shock. He chaired morning proceedings in Rajya Sabha and attended key meetings until about 4 PM, when a statement noted he’d visit Jaipur. He submitted his resignation. In his letter to President Murmu, Dhankhar wrote: “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.” He also expressed gratitude to President Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and Members of Parliament.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh remarked the sudden resignation was “shocking and unexpected,” noting that Dhankhar seemed well just hours earlier and suggesting that “there is more than meets the eye.” Other members have also cited surprise and urged Dhankhar to reconsider, while maintaining that health must take top priority.
