Centre Mandates Shift to PNG, Warns of LPG Disconnection in Covered Areas

Bhubaneswar: The Government of India has directed households in areas with existing piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure to switch from LPG, warning that LPG supply could be discontinued within three months for those who fail to comply.

The order applies to residential areas where PNG networks are already operational. Officials said the move is aimed at promoting cleaner and more efficient fuel systems while reducing dependence on cylinder-based LPG distribution.

Under the directive, housing societies that deny access for pipeline installation will face a formal process initiated by gas companies. This includes issuing public notices and newspaper advertisements, and if access is not granted within three working days, further action may be taken, including potential LPG supply disruption.

Individual households that refuse to transition to PNG despite availability will also be served notices. Continued non-compliance could lead to disconnection of LPG connections after due process.

Authorities clarified that LPG supply will continue in areas where PNG connections are not technically feasible. However, once feasibility is established, gas companies may reassess and begin the transition process.

Officials said the policy is part of a broader push to expand city gas distribution networks and ensure reliable, continuous and environmentally friendly fuel supply in urban areas.
