Delhi Deploys Unusual Bird-Control Measure Ahead of Republic Day Flypast

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, authorities in the national capital have implemented an unconventional yet effective strategy to reduce the risk of bird strikes during aerial rehearsals and the main flypast on January 26.

The Indian Air Force (IAF), in coordination with the Delhi Forest Department, is distributing more than 1,270 kilograms of boneless chicken at around 20 designated locations across the city. The initiative is aimed at diverting black kites, which are commonly found in large numbers in Delhi, away from critical flight paths used during Republic Day air displays.

Officials said the feeding exercise is carried out annually in the days leading up to the parade. By providing food at predetermined spots away from flying zones, the birds are discouraged from congregating near areas where fighter jets, transport aircraft and helicopters operate at low altitudes.

The measure is part of a broader bird hazard management plan that includes monitoring bird movement, waste management near air corridors and coordination with civic agencies. Authorities stressed that ensuring a bird-free airspace is essential for the safety of pilots and aircraft during high-precision flypasts.

The Republic Day parade, held along Kartavya Path, features elaborate aerial displays by the Indian Air Force and attracts thousands of spectators each year. Officials said all precautionary steps are being taken to ensure smooth rehearsals and a safe, incident-free celebration.
