Govt Mandates Prominent Labelling of AI-Generated Content on Social Media

Bhubaneswar: The government has directed social media platforms to prominently label all AI-generated or synthetic content and embed identifiers to ensure transparency and accountability, according to an official order issued on Tuesday.

Under the new directive, platforms must ensure that AI labels or metadata cannot be removed, suppressed, or altered once applied, preventing users from disguising or misrepresenting synthetic content as real.

The order also mandates that social media companies deploy automated detection and moderation tools to prevent the circulation of AI-generated content that is illegal, sexually exploitative, deceptive, or otherwise harmful.

Additionally, platforms are required to warn users at least once every three months about penalties for violating rules related to AI misuse, including deepfakes and deceptive synthetic media. The warnings must clearly outline legal consequences and platform enforcement actions.

The move is part of the government’s broader push to curb misinformation, deepfake abuse, and online harms as generative AI tools become more widely accessible.

Officials said the new rules aim to strengthen digital trust and ensure responsible use of artificial intelligence across social platforms.
