Hindalco Announces ₹21,000-Crore Expansion at Sambalpur, Boosts Aluminium and EV Ecosystem

Bhubaneswar: Hindalco Industries Limited has announced a major ₹21,000-crore expansion of its aluminium smelter at the Aditya Aluminium Complex in Sambalpur, further cementing Odisha’s status as a critical industrial and manufacturing hub. The expansion will add 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum (LTPA) of aluminium smelting capacity.

Alongside the smelter expansion, the company has commissioned a ₹4,500-crore flat-rolled products (FRP) and battery foil facility with an annual capacity of 1.7 lakh tonnes. The projects were inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

A key highlight of the investment is India’s first battery-grade aluminium foil manufacturing plant. The facility is expected to support up to 100 GWh of lithium-ion cell production, significantly strengthening the domestic electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage ecosystem while reducing dependence on imports.

The projects form part of Hindalco’s larger ₹37,000-crore investment roadmap for Odisha and are projected to generate more than 15,000 direct and indirect jobs nationwide.

Hindalco Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said the expansion aligns with India’s goals of self-reliance and sustainable manufacturing. Managing Director Satish Pai noted that the company’s integrated upstream-to-downstream strategy will enhance value addition, supply chain resilience, and global competitiveness.

Following the announcement, Hindalco shares ended the session higher on the National Stock Exchange, reflecting positive investor sentiment around the expansion.
