Bhubaneswar: In a significant diplomatic development, India will resume issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals from July 24, marking a cautious step toward normalizing relations between the two Asian giants after years of tension.
The announcement was made by the Indian Embassy in Beijing, which stated that Chinese citizens can now apply online for Indian tourist visas through the Indian Visa Application Centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Applicants will need to submit the required documents as part of the standard procedure.
This marks the first time since 2020 that Chinese nationals will be able to apply for Indian tourist visas. India had suspended all tourist visa categories for Chinese citizens following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, a decision that was later compounded by rising tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) after the deadly Galwan Valley clash in June 2020, which left soldiers dead on both sides.
The move is being seen as part of a broader effort to revive people-to-people engagement and ease strained bilateral relations. While both nations continue to navigate complex military and strategic differences, the restoration of tourist visas signals an attempt to rebuild trust and encourage trade, cultural exchange, and tourism.
Diplomatic experts note that tourism resumption could lead to greater economic interdependence, fostering improved dialogue and potentially paving the way for more formal negotiations on long-standing disputes.
While the resumption of tourist visas may appear symbolic, it could be a practical first step toward easing bilateral tensions and reestablishing civil and diplomatic channels.
Observers will be watching closely for any reciprocal gesture from China, as well as future developments in military and trade negotiations.
