IndiGo Introduces Fuel Surcharge as Aviation Costs Surge

Bhubaneswar: India’s largest airline IndiGo has introduced a fuel surcharge on air tickets following a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel prices linked to the ongoing crisis in West Asia.

Under the revised structure, passengers will pay an additional ₹425 on domestic and subcontinent routes, while long-haul international sectors such as flights to Europe could see surcharges of up to ₹2,300 per ticket. Aviation fuel typically accounts for around 40% of operating costs for airlines, making carriers highly sensitive to fluctuations in global energy prices.

The move comes amid escalating tensions involving Iran and broader instability in West Asia, which have pushed up global fuel prices and disrupted energy supply routes.

Another major Indian carrier, Air India, had already implemented a similar phased fuel surcharge starting March 12, signalling wider pressure on the aviation sector.

IndiGo said the surcharge is intended to partially offset the rise in fuel costs and help avoid steeper airfare increases. The airline added that it will continue to monitor fuel price trends and adjust the surcharge accordingly.

However, the decision has drawn mixed reactions from travellers, particularly those flying on domestic routes, many of whom expressed frustration over the additional costs being added to ticket prices.
