Bhubaneswar: The intensifying confrontation between Iran and its adversaries has taken a new and alarming turn after Tehran reportedly launched a missile strike on a major oil facility in Bahrain, raising fears of a broader regional war and threatening critical global energy infrastructure.
Refinery Hit Near Manama
The missile reportedly struck the Ma’ameer refinery complex, operated by the Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco), located on the eastern coast of the island kingdom just south of the capital Manama.
The impact triggered a large blaze that spread through sections of the refinery before emergency crews managed to bring the flames under control.
Officials from Bahrain Ministry of Interior confirmed that an industrial facility in the Ma’ameer area had been targeted and said authorities immediately deployed emergency responders to contain the situation. Initial reports suggest the fire caused significant disruption at the site, though full damage assessments are still underway.
Part of Iran’s Retaliation Campaign
The attack is being viewed as part of Iran’s wider retaliation campaign following the joint military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, last week.
Since then, Tehran has issued strong warnings that countries hosting Western military infrastructure could become targets if they assist operations against Iran.
Tensions Spread Beyond the Gulf
The escalation is not confined to the Gulf region. On the same day, Iran reportedly attempted to target a U.S. military installation near Baghdad International Airport in Iraq, further widening the theatre of conflict.
Meanwhile, the British-controlled airbase RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus has been placed on heightened alert. The base, which had reportedly been made available for U.S. operations related to the strikes on Iran, has triggered several security warnings in recent days. Authorities issued precautionary advisories to nearby residents amid concerns it could become a potential target.
Energy and Security Concerns Rise
The strike on Bahrain’s refining infrastructure underscores the growing vulnerability of energy facilities across the Gulf. The region hosts some of the world’s most important oil processing and shipping hubs, and any disruption carries implications for global energy markets.
With multiple countries now being drawn into the crisis and military installations placed on alert across West Asia and the eastern Mediterranean, analysts warn the situation risks spiralling into a much wider regional confrontation if diplomatic efforts fail to contain it.
