Khandagiri Mela 2026 Sees Parking Fee Row, Artist Controversy Amid Heavy Footfall

Bhubaneswar:  The ongoing Khandagiri Magh Mela 2026 has been marked by controversy even as it continues to draw massive crowds for its religious rituals and cultural performances.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a show-cause notice to the leaseholder managing parking facilities at the mela after complaints of overcharging visitors, with fees reportedly almost double the officially approved rates. Civic authorities have sought an explanation and warned of strict action if violations are confirmed.

Adding to the tensions, the Kinnar (transgender) community, led by activist Meera Parida, has threatened to launch a protest against Jatra artist Kahna Swain over an alleged derogatory remark made during a performance. The community has demanded a public apology, warning of agitation if the issue is not addressed promptly.

Despite these disputes, the annual Magh Mela continues to witness huge footfall. Thousands of devotees are participating in religious observances, while four prominent Jatra troupes are performing nightly, drawing packed audiences.

To manage the influx and maintain order, authorities have put in place extensive security arrangements, including the installation of over 100 CCTV cameras, heavy police deployment, traffic regulation and crowd-control measures. Officials said the focus remains on ensuring public safety and the smooth conduct of the festival.

The twin controversies have underscored the challenges of managing large-scale cultural events, even as Khandagiri Mela retains its status as one of Odisha’s most significant religious and folk-cultural gatherings.
