Koraput Pepper Finds Growing National and Global Markets

Koraput district, long recognised for its coffee plantations, is fast emerging as a notable centre for high-quality pepper cultivation, with the spice witnessing rising demand in both national and international markets.

Pepper is currently grown across nearly 1,550 hectares in the district, where the unique agro-climatic conditions—marked by moderate temperatures, adequate rainfall, and rich soil—have proven ideal for spice crops. The quality of Koraput pepper has drawn the attention of external marketing agencies, which are increasingly sourcing it as raw material for processing, particularly for white pepper.

Farmers are presently receiving around ₹700 per kilogram, reflecting the strong market appetite for the produce. However, despite the encouraging prices and demand, cultivators remain cautious about expanding acreage due to limited incentives and support mechanisms.

Officials from the horticulture department said efforts are underway to address these constraints, with plans to gradually expand pepper cultivation in Koraput to about 3,000 hectares. The move is expected to enhance farmer incomes, diversify the district’s agricultural profile, and position Koraput as a key spice hub alongside its established coffee identity.

If supported with better incentives, market linkages, and technical assistance, Koraput’s pepper could become a significant contributor to Odisha’s agri-export basket in the coming years.
