Meta Under Scrutiny for Profiting from Fraudulent Ads, Investigation Reveals

Bhubaneswar: A recent investigation has revealed that Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is allegedly earning substantial profits from fraudulent advertisements circulating across its social media platforms.

According to internal projections cited in the report, nearly 10% of Meta’s total revenue in 2024 could be linked to such deceptive ads. These include fake online shops, illegal gambling platforms, and unapproved medical product promotions, many of which use celebrity photos and real brand names without authorisation to mislead users.

The investigation suggests that these fraudulent ads are achieving widespread reach, exploiting Meta’s vast advertising network and user-targeting capabilities. Despite mounting complaints and regulatory attention in several countries, Meta has reportedly failed to take sufficient action to curb the spread of such content.

Critics accuse the tech giant of “turning a blind eye” to scams in pursuit of higher ad revenues. Digital rights groups and cybersecurity experts have urged stronger global oversight and stricter ad verification policies, arguing that the company’s current measures remain inadequate.

Meta has not yet issued an official response to the latest allegations.
