Bhubaneswar: Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami on Tuesday set a strong example of civic responsibility by appearing before the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing and urging citizens to actively participate in the voter list verification process.
After attending the hearing at Swarnamoyee Vidyalaya, Shami dismissed concerns surrounding the exercise and emphasized that voter list correction is essential for a healthy and stronger democracy. Speaking to reporters, the national sports icon said there was no difficulty in attending the hearing and that everyone invited should come forward without hesitation.
“I believe SIR is not something which is harming anyone. It is your responsibility to get the correction done and ensure your name is on the voter list,” Shami said. “They called me, and I had no issues in coming here. The verification process was handled well.”
The fast bowler, who has been residing in the area for the past 20 to 25 years, appreciated the smooth conduct of the proceedings and the officials involved. He also stated that he would willingly cooperate again if required.
“I have been here for 20–25 years. If they call me again, I will come,” he added.
Shami’s remarks come amid ongoing voter list revision efforts aimed at ensuring accuracy and inclusivity in electoral rolls. His participation and public endorsement of the process have been widely seen as a positive message encouraging citizens to engage responsibly in democratic procedures.
Election officials reiterated that the SIR exercise is intended to strengthen electoral integrity and urged voters to cooperate by updating and verifying their details within the stipulated timeframe.
