Multiple Animal Deaths Reported at Nandankanan Zoo, Probe Underway

Bhubaneswar: Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha has reported a worrying spate of animal deaths, with eight animals dying within a span of just eight days, raising concerns among wildlife experts and animal welfare advocates.

According to zoo authorities, the deaths include five crocodiles, two white peacocks, and one mouse deer. Preliminary assessments suggest that the crocodiles may have succumbed to an infection, though detailed post-mortem and laboratory test results are awaited to confirm the exact cause.

As a precautionary measure, zoo officials have initiated vaccinations for other susceptible animals and undertaken intensive cleaning and disinfection of crocodile enclosures and water tanks. Surveillance within the zoo premises has also been intensified to prevent any further spread of disease.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and there is no immediate threat to visitors or other animals. However, the incident has revived memories of a similar outbreak reported at Nandankanan Zoo in 2015, when several animals died due to health complications.

The recent deaths have sparked renewed discussions on zoo management practices, enclosure hygiene, and long-term animal welfare measures, with wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists urging greater transparency and stricter biosecurity protocols.
