Multiple Low-Pressure Systems Likely Over Bay of Bengal; IMD Issues Alerts for Odisha and Southern States

Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure system is likely to form over the southern Bay of Bengal around October 24–25, further intensifying an already active weather pattern over the region, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD reported that a well-marked low-pressure area currently lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is moving west-northwestward. It is expected to intensify into a depression near the north Tamil Nadu–south Andhra Pradesh coast within the next 24 hours, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds to several coastal areas.

The system is likely to continue its west-northwest movement, impacting north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh over the next couple of days.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Bhubaneswar has issued warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds along the Odisha coast and southern districts through October 25.

Meteorologists are also monitoring the development of two more potential low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal — one expected around October 26–27 and another around October 29–30. While the first may have a limited impact, weather experts caution that the second system could intensify further, possibly leading to heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions.

Some foreign weather models have indicated the possibility of cyclonic development from the second and third systems. However, the IMD has not yet confirmed any such formation and continues to monitor the situation closely.

Authorities have urged fishermen to avoid venturing into deep-sea areas and coastal residents to stay alert to official advisories as the situation evolves.
