Mumbai Bids Farewell to Iconic Parle Products Factory in Vile Parle

Bhubaneswar: Mumbai is set to lose one of its most cherished industrial landmarks as the iconic Parle Products factory in Vile Parle prepares to shut down, bringing an end to nearly 90 years of history. The factory, synonymous with Parle-G biscuits and generations of childhood memories, will make way for commercial redevelopment.

Established in the late 1930s, the Vile Parle unit played a pivotal role in shaping India’s packaged food industry. It was here that Parle-G—one of the world’s most consumed biscuits—became a household staple, cutting across class and geography to become a symbol of affordability and trust.

Parle Products has confirmed that manufacturing operations will be shifted to its modern facilities outside Mumbai, citing logistical efficiency and urban constraints. The land, located in one of Mumbai’s prime suburbs, is slated for redevelopment, reflecting the city’s broader transition from industrial hubs to commercial and real estate-driven growth.

The closure has sparked a wave of nostalgia among Mumbaikars, many of whom associate the factory with the aroma of freshly baked biscuits and the city’s industrial past. While the Parle-G legacy will continue nationwide, the shutdown of the Vile Parle factory marks the end of an era for Mumbai’s manufacturing heritage.
