NHAI Deploys AI-Powered 3D Survey Vehicles to Modernise Highway Maintenance

Bhubaneswar: In a major push toward technology-driven infrastructure management, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun deploying AI-enabled 3D survey vehicles across 23 states to assess and monitor the condition of national highways.

The advanced vehicles, equipped with laser scanners and 360-degree high-resolution cameras, are set to survey more than 20,000 kilometres of national highways. Using cutting-edge imaging and sensing technology, the system can accurately detect cracks, potholes, surface deformations, and other structural defects on road surfaces.

Data collected through these surveys is analysed by artificial intelligence systems, enabling faster identification of problem areas and prioritisation of repair work. Officials say this technology-driven approach will significantly reduce manual inspection time, improve maintenance planning, and enhance overall road safety.

The initiative is part of NHAI’s broader strategy to modernise highway asset management, increase operational efficiency, and ensure better riding quality for commuters. By enabling timely repairs and preventive maintenance, the AI-based surveys are expected to extend the lifespan of highways while reducing accidents caused by poor road conditions.

The rollout marks another step in India’s efforts to integrate digital innovation into infrastructure development, supporting the creation of safer, smarter, and more resilient transport networks nationwide.
