Odisha Begins Performance Review of College Teachers; Underperformers May Face Compulsory Retirement

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has initiated a process that could lead to the compulsory retirement of college teachers found to be consistently underperforming. The Higher Education Department has directed all government-run and government-aided universities and colleges to review the performance of their teaching staff and submit detailed reports by January 31.

According to official instructions, college authorities have been asked to thoroughly assess teachers’ service records, annual performance appraisal reports, work conduct, and integrity. Faculty members who fail to meet the prescribed standards may be considered for premature retirement in accordance with existing service rules.

The government has emphasised that the evaluation process must be fair, transparent, and strictly evidence-based. It has also made it clear that teachers’ rights should be fully protected and that any action taken must rely on proper documentation and due procedure.

Following the directive, universities and colleges across the state have begun internal assessments to meet the deadline. Officials have described the move as a key reform aimed at improving academic standards and accountability in higher education.

However, the initiative is expected to trigger debate within academic circles, with educators raising concerns about transparency, objective evaluation criteria, and the parallel need for institutional mechanisms to support professional development and performance improvement.
