Odisha Cabinet Approves ₹10,000 Crore Integrated Solar Manufacturing Project by TPREL

Bhubaneswar: In a significant push towards strengthening Odisha’s renewable energy ecosystem, the State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has approved a ₹10,000 crore integrated solar manufacturing project proposed by Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL).

The project will be established at the Tata Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and will mark Odisha’s first upstream solar manufacturing facility, encompassing the complete value chain—from ingot and wafer production to solar cell fabrication. Officials described the initiative as a strategic milestone in positioning Odisha as a major hub for renewable energy equipment manufacturing in the country.

The facility will be developed in two phases. Once fully operational, it will have a manufacturing capacity of 10 GW for ingot and wafer production and 5 GW for solar cell manufacturing. The integrated nature of the project is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on imported solar components, particularly in critical upstream segments.

According to government estimates, the project will generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, including a substantial number of high-skilled jobs. In addition to job creation, the facility is expected to catalyse ancillary industries such as solar glass, specialty chemicals, packaging materials, logistics, and precision machinery, thereby expanding the state’s industrial ecosystem.

Officials said the Cabinet decision aligns with Odisha’s broader vision of promoting clean energy, boosting domestic manufacturing, and contributing to national goals of energy security and sustainability. The project is also expected to enhance Odisha’s attractiveness as a destination for large-scale green investments.

With this approval, Odisha takes a decisive step towards becoming a key player in India’s renewable energy manufacturing landscape, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable industrial growth and the clean energy transition.
