Odisha Comes at the Fifth in Social Behaviour

Bhubaneswar: Currently India is known as the most rapidly developing country. Different states are also claiming to be growing at a faster pace. But whether the social behaviour and mindset of the people have changed as required especially in the aspect of civil behaviour, security, attitude towards gender, gender discrimination etc.  It is very important to analyse the changing mindset and thinking of the contemporary generation regarding various sensitive topics. 

A recent survey report of India Today has been published in this regard analyzing the social behaviour in different states of India. According to the survey report of the General Domestic Behaviour ( GDB), Kerala is placed at top in the social behaviour list followed by Tamilnadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra. Odisha is at the fifth position. This survey was conducted in 21 states and one union territory (Chandigarh), Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are placed at the bottom. It indicates how weak the social behaviour statistics are. 

Odisha takes third position in the survey conducted on civil behaviour, and Tamilnadu is at the top,  West Bengal is at the second position, Kerala at the fifth place. Civil behaviour includes travelling without ticket, throwing garbage at open places, helping the needy people etc. as per the government statistics, in 2023-24, Indian railways has identified about 3.6 crores travelers traveling in the train without tickets, from which 2, 231.74 crore rupees fine was collected. Similarly, out of the people who participated in the survey, around 61 percent were ready to give bribes for doing their work in any government or private offices.  Uttar Pradesh tops in this list. The survey states, 52 percent people prefer to pay in cash in property deals to avoid tax deductions. 

Odisha is at the ninety position in gender sensitivity whereas Kerala is at the top. Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra have taken the top five spots whereas Uttar Pradesh is at the bottom. An estimated more than nine thousand people across the country had participated in this survey. As per the data, 69 percent women think they should fully control their earnings but 31 percent state the financial decisions should be taken with the approval of the family. Kerala is at the top position regarding women taking their own financial decisions, as 91 percent people have supported this there. But in Odisha, which is at the ninth position, the percentage is only 17 percent. Majority of the people participating in the survey said they should take their financial decisions with the approval of the family. 

On the other hand Odisha supported more on providing equal opportunity for education and higher studies to the girls as the boys. In the general statistics this percentage was 93 percent whereas in Odisha 97 percent people have supported this. Similarly, in the case of public protection, Odisha remains at the fourth position. Kerala again comes at the top here, Himachal at the second. Generally, 86 percent women feel safe while travelling in public transport and 44 percent said they face harassment. 

Odisha comes at the 13th position in diversity and discrimination. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra remain at first, second, third and fourth position respectively and Chandigarh takes the fifth place. Madhya Pradesh is at the bottom spot in this aspect. Out of the people who participated in the survey, 61 percent were against inter-religion marriage. 

Notably, Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of all the districts of Odisha 2023-24 financial year was 7.58 lakh crore rupees and its per capita GDP is 1, 63, 101 rupees which is comparatively less than the national average. Odisha contributes 10 percent of the mining production.
