Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has approved the reappointment of 800 retired police personnel to strengthen policing and internal security across the state. Retired Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI), Sub-Inspectors (SI), and Inspectors will be re-engaged and deployed as Special Police Officers (SPOs).
The Home Department on Tuesday formally informed the Director General of Police (DGP) about the government’s approval for the proposal. The reappointed personnel will assist the police force in operational duties, leveraging their experience in a sensitive and manpower-intensive department.
However, the decision has sparked debate, as the state government had earlier taken a firm stand against post-retirement re-employment. The move to accommodate as many as 800 retired officers in one go, particularly in the police department, has drawn attention and raised questions in administrative and public circles.
Officials indicate that the step has been taken to address manpower shortages and enhance law-and-order management, though detailed guidelines regarding tenure, remuneration, and deployment are yet to be announced.
