Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to strengthen passenger safety, the Odisha government has made it mandatory for all sleeper coach buses operating in the state to be equipped with water tanks and functional sprinkler systems to tackle fire emergencies.
The directive was issued by State Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena during a meeting with the Bus Owners’ Association at his official residence. The decision underscores the government’s intent to strictly enforce existing safety norms and comply with court directions related to public transport safety.
Addressing the media after the meeting, the minister said every sleeper bus must have at least one water tank along with an active sprinkler system capable of controlling fires in emergency situations. Emphasising zero tolerance towards safety lapses, he stated that passenger safety remains the government’s top priority and that no compromise would be allowed.
The minister highlighted that air-conditioned sleeper buses are particularly vulnerable to fire incidents due to electrical loads and enclosed interiors. As a result, the transport department has been asked to place special emphasis on ensuring compliance by AC sleeper coaches.
All bus operators have been instructed to implement the safety measures immediately. Non-compliance will invite strict action, including penalties and possible suspension of permits. The transport department has also been directed to carry out regular inspections and ensure rigorous enforcement across the state.
The move is expected to significantly improve safety standards for overnight travellers, particularly passengers who sleep during long-distance journeys, and restore confidence in sleeper bus services across Odisha.
