Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s renowned Buddhist heritage sites—Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri—collectively known as the Buddhist Triangle, have been included in India’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage inscription. The development marks an important step towards securing global recognition for the ancient archaeological complex.
The inclusion acknowledges the region’s historical and spiritual significance as a prominent centre of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism between the 5th and 13th centuries CE. Archaeological findings at the sites include monasteries, stupas, sculptures, inscriptions and relics that reflect the evolution of Buddhist thought, art and education in eastern India.
Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri, located in Jajpur district, are considered among the most important Buddhist complexes in the country, offering evidence of sustained monastic activity and international scholarly exchanges during their peak period.
Officials and heritage experts have noted that placement on the Tentative List is a prerequisite for nomination to the World Heritage List. The recognition is expected to strengthen conservation initiatives, promote academic research and enhance heritage tourism in Odisha.
With this step, the state moves closer to achieving full UNESCO World Heritage status for the Buddhist Triangle, which could further elevate Odisha’s profile on the global cultural and archaeological map.
