Bhubaneswar: In a landmark move to expand access to artificial intelligence tools, OpenAI has announced that its premium ChatGPT Go plan will be available free of cost for all users in India for one year, starting Tuesday, November 4. The initiative, part of a limited-time promotional offer, underscores the company’s commitment to supporting India’s growing community of developers, students, and professionals.
According to OpenAI, the decision follows a massive surge in ChatGPT’s popularity across India, where paid subscriptions reportedly doubled within a month of the Go plan’s launch in August. The offer coincides with the company’s DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru—OpenAI’s first in India—celebrating innovation and local AI adoption.
The ChatGPT Go plan, powered by OpenAI’s latest GPT-5 model, offers advanced features such as faster response times, higher message limits, image generation, and file analysis. It also provides longer conversation memory and smoother performance compared to the free tier.
“India has become one of our fastest-growing user bases globally. This offer reflects our appreciation for the creativity, innovation, and enthusiasm of Indian users,” an OpenAI spokesperson said.
Users can activate the offer via the ChatGPT website or mobile app by logging into their accounts and selecting the “Upgrade Plan” option. While the subscription remains free for 12 months, users must verify their accounts with a valid payment method, though no charges will apply during the promotional period.
Industry analysts have called the move a strategic step to deepen OpenAI’s presence in Asia, where AI adoption is accelerating across education, technology, and creative sectors.
With this offer, millions of Indian users now have access to premium AI tools—potentially transforming workflows, research, and creative expression across industries.
