Over 1.1 Million Migratory Birds Flock to Chilika, Reinforcing Odisha’s Global Wetland Significance

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s iconic Chilika Lake has once again transformed into a spectacular natural haven, hosting over 1.1 million migratory birds this winter season and reaffirming its status as one of Asia’s most significant wetland ecosystems.

Spread across more than 1,100 square kilometres, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon becomes a seasonal refuge for avian visitors travelling thousands of kilometres from Siberia, Central Asia, Mongolia and parts of Europe. From October to March, Chilika’s nutrient-rich waters and mudflats provide ideal feeding and nesting grounds for a wide range of migratory species.

Prominent visitors this season include flamingos, northern pintails, gadwalls, shovellers, godwits and sandpipers, among many others. Birding hotspots such as the Nalbana Bird Sanctuary and Mangalajodi are witnessing heightened activity, attracting ornithologists, wildlife photographers and eco-tourists from across India and abroad.

Forest and wildlife officials have attributed the impressive bird count to sustained conservation measures undertaken over the years. These include the operation of 21 dedicated bird protection camps, intensified anti-poaching patrols, and community-led awareness programmes that actively involve local residents in safeguarding the lake’s biodiversity.

The renewed influx of migratory birds has also translated into tangible benefits for local communities, particularly through eco-tourism and nature-based livelihoods. Authorities view this as a rare convergence of environmental conservation and economic opportunity.

With Chilika once again commanding global attention as a thriving migratory bird destination, the development underscores Odisha’s commitment to preserving its rich natural heritage while promoting sustainable, community-driven conservation practices.
