Bhubaneswar: Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is being observed to recognise the immense contributions of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to India’s economic growth, global standing and cultural influence, even in the absence of a major convention this year.
India’s diaspora continues to play a critical role in strengthening the country’s economy, with remittances touching a record USD 136 billion in 2025. Beyond financial inflows, overseas Indians have emerged as influential global stakeholders, driving innovation through Silicon Valley startups, shaping academic and research ecosystems, and occupying leadership positions in governments across at least 15 countries.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other leaders have lauded the diaspora as a vital bridge between India and the world, emphasising their role in advancing the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. They noted that the global Indian community not only contributes capital and expertise, but also enhances India’s soft power by carrying forward its cultural values and democratic ethos.
Greetings and messages from political leaders, diplomats, and organisations across India and abroad highlighted the resilience of the Indian diaspora and its enduring emotional and cultural ties with the homeland. Officials underlined that despite geographical distance, overseas Indians remain deeply invested in India’s progress and global reputation.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas thus continues to serve as a reminder of the diaspora’s strategic importance in nation-building, innovation, and diplomacy, reinforcing the shared journey of Indians at home and abroad towards a developed and globally influential India.
