Preserving India’s Handloom Heritage: A Call to Action

Kolkata: On National Handloom Day, students of iLEAD’s fashion department celebrated the rich heritage of Indian handlooms, showcasing intricate weaves and colourful prints that are a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of our weavers. However, fast fashion and synthetic textiles threaten to erase this legacy.

To counter this, iLEAD students and staff partnered with local weavers to organize:

1. Street Fashion Show: Stunning handloom outfits highlighted Indian textiles’ craftsmanship and heritage.

2. Street Play: A thought-provoking play highlighted the irony of foreign appreciation for Indian textiles, while Indian youth often overlook their own heritage.

3. Exhibition-cum-Sale: Local Bengal weavers displayed and sold exquisite handloom products, receiving an overwhelming response.

This resounding success inspired a new generation to value and support India’s handloom traditions. As an institute committed to sustainable fashion, we urge everyone to:

– Support our weavers

– Preserve handloom traditions

– Adopt “Bunkar Aapnao, Desh Bachao” and “Taat Amader Gorbho, Bharoter Gorbho”

Let’s weave a sustainable future together! Buy handloom, support weavers, and promote India’s handloom heritage.
