Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu has approved the conferment of gallantry and service awards on 70 personnel of the Indian Armed Forces ahead of India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations, recognising acts of exceptional bravery and distinguished service across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Among the honours, the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, has been awarded to Indian Air Force officer Shukla. He was recognised for his role as a pilot on Axiom Mission 4, which successfully flew to the International Space Station in July 2025 with an international crew, marking a significant milestone in India’s expanding participation in human spaceflight missions.
Three Kirti Chakras, the country’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, have been awarded to Major Arshdeep Singh, Naib Subedar Dolsson Swain, and Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair for acts of conspicuous courage and exemplary leadership in the line of duty. In addition, 13 Shaurya Chakras have been approved for personnel from different services for displaying bravery under challenging operational conditions.
The President has also approved a range of distinguished service awards, including the Vishisht Seva Medal to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. She has been recognised for her overall distinguished service, which includes her role during Operation Sindoor, where she was part of official briefings during the 2025 India–Pakistan conflict.
The announcement has generated discussion on social media, with some users debating the scope of contributions recognised under gallantry and service awards. However, official citations underline that such honours are granted based on a comprehensive assessment of service records, leadership, and contributions to national security.
The awards will be formally presented during the Republic Day investiture ceremonies, which traditionally honour the courage, dedication and service of India’s armed forces.
